IDEA
The idea in 2005 was to use the power of photography to show and share different life experiences, cultural traditions and ideas. Focused on the lives of women, the exchange of photos created a base for mutual understanding and partnership between young women coming from two very different cultural backgrounds.
THE GROUPS
After the Student Days 2004 in Karlsruhe, Alex Kamweru from Kenya and Evelyn Schnauder from Germany founded the girls’ groups in Nairobi and Karlsruhe.
In Nairobi, the group of six girls is part of a NGO girls’ programme in Kibera Slum called “Binti Pamoja” (“Daughters United”).
The Binti Pamoja Center – a Programm of the NGO Carolina for Kibera- is a reproductive health and women’s right Center which creates a safe space for girls in Kibera to face and discuss the issues which affect them in their everyday life.
In Germany, the group of eight girls belongs to the international youth network World Youth Citizens.
"CELEBRATING THE WOMEN IN OUR LIVES"
After taking and exchanging photos about important and impressive women in their lives in 2005 the girls brought together an amazing collection of photos showing differences and similarities of women’s lives, hopes, challenges and dreams in Kenya and Germany.
The photos have been shown in several exhibitions with the title “Celebrating the women in our lives”.
FUTURE PLANS
Two years later the project now is figuring out how to enhance the contact and the partnership between both groups and how to continue and develop the exchange with using further journalistic skills and ways of communication.
Facing the challenges of long distance and different lifestyles, the aim is to strengthen the contact and to involve and reach more people to share the unique experiences of cultural exchange and the opportunity of sharing ideas and learning from each other.
