WYC France

IDEA

WYC France follows the idea that the 21st century should be one of a controlled and sustainable development.

This idea constitutes the base for the elaboration of the project "Pupils for sustainable development". It consists of interventions in schools about the theme of sustainable development.

The first programme took place in 2006 at the Saint Francis school in Caen, France. Beside the goal to raise awareness for the issues related to sustainable development, it aimed on encouraging the children to get involved in concrete activities to improve their level. The programme was designed for pupils of the study levels CM1 and CM2 (10-12 years old) who were distributed in several small working groups. The coordinators included the different themes “our unique world”, “the daily ecology practice” and “urban transportation methods” and used the assistance of visual supports (panels, photos, drawings, etc.) and commentaries. After a few minutes, the students started to participate actively, asking questions and making suggestions.

The day was closed with a conclusion in which the pupils could give their impressions and reactions about the programme and received their diplomas.

Finally, the students got the task to – once we would have left – to present one or several ideas which have marked them, to show the malfunctions of the current development and or to propose solutions in the form of drawings that constitutes a better control expression.

RESULT

The students impressed us some days later by presenting some drawings which were a testimony of the interest that they had found in answering these questions. Their ideas and their recommendations showed us how receptive they were and how ready to commit themselves to new ways of development. Their drawings were exposed to the public during the sustainable development days.

FOLLOW UP

WYC France envisions a white book and a blog for these students in which they are proud to show their drawings in the form of a chart of sustainable development to their friends as well as to the people who are near them and become, thus, carriers of sustainable development to their level. In this way, we will stay in contact with them.

CONTINUITY

Seeing the success of this project, World Youth Citizens France will promote similar projects with other pupils in other schools in the twon. World Youth Citizens France also thought about the possibility to vary different forms of projects for sustainable development and how to involve many more persons in our team.
