Berlin 05 - Festival for Youth and Politics

In June 2005, the festival “Berlin 05” offered several thousand young people from Germany and abroad the possibility to get to know political youth initiatives and organisations and to have fun at concerts and all kind of cultural activities.

With the objective to animate to political participation, the local WYC group of Karlsruhe promoted the festival in their town and participated as a group. Some members also contributed to the preparation of the festival by taking part in the prep-coms organised by the German Federal Youth Council.

During the festival week-end, WYC conducted two workshops, presenting the idea to help establishing project partnerships between young people in Germany and youth groups in other countries. For this purpose, we presented the idea of the WYC network and the concept of the 3rd World Youth Congress which should be held just a few weeks after “Berlin 05”. The workshop participants could fill in “partnership proposals”, outlining their interests concerning the kind and the region of the project. We promised to take these proposals to Scotland where we would conduct a similar workshop and where international delegates could fill in “project proposals”. A first occasion for the potential project partners to meet up in person should be the Student Days “One World” in October 2005 in Karlsruhe.

A concrete outcome of this approach was for example the foundation of a local WYC group in Berlin and their photo exchange with a group in Cambodia.
